WHEN COMMON SENSE MEETS INNOCENCE, BADLA HAPPENS
Badal Gupta (BIG B), a reknowned lawyer with 100% success record, meets his client Naina Sethi (Taapsee Pannu). Naina is pleading not guilty on the charges of the murder of her boyfriend Arjun (Tony Luke). Naina tells Badal her story, what actually happened that night.
The story is such that it could be explained in a single line, but what takes 2 hours to tell this single line?
You find out !
This is the official adaptation of Spanish film "The Invisible Guest". Leaving some tiny modifications, the story is nearly the same. So, the novelty factor here is negligible to be considered.
But then, had anyone even heard the name of that Spanish film? Obviously not.
And then again its Sujoy Ghosh behind the camera, the man from whom nothing predictable can be expected. This is exactly where Badla stands. The screenplay will not even let you blink an eye throughout the 121 minutes. Seriously ! you have to fully concentrate throughout the film to understand each and every aspect and then connect the dots in the end. And the figure you will get at the end by connecting the dots, will give chills to your spine.
At the beginning, there is a song and at the end there is another one. No complaints, but I was waiting for 2 things-
1) Kyun Rabba
2) An unexpected SRK cameo (just producer things) ;P
Sometimes I wonder, what made BigB say yes to movies like RGV ki AAG, TOH.etc. No one was, no one is and no one can be another Amitabh Bachchan at anytime. He is just magic in his role. Even his humble baritone can make the villain tremble in fear. His wicked act as Badal is going to stay with you for sometime and it will definitely haunt you, when you are going to trust anyone. Definitely not his best, but surely one of his bestest acts till date.
Taapsee Pannu is a gem. Her distraught, her pride and her shrewdness as Naina will captivate you in no time. Forget Pink, this is her best performance till date. She has never been so natural onscreen, as she is in this one. Till her final confession, you will actually doubt her true colours.
But the one who really stole the show is none other than Amrita Singh. You are definitely going to feel for her character. She brings her brilliance onscreen with the much required gusto and she just kills it in a scene where she confronts Taapsee's character.
Tony Luke is very subtle. His expressions and acting seem very natural and he gives a very good performance with whatever script he was given. Yes! wish he could have worked a little more with his accent.
Manav Kaul has a pivotal role to play and he as always, leaves an impact. Wish he was given a much more screen time.
Denzil Smith is good in his cameo and special mention to Tanveer Ghani as Nimbi. His role is the most important one.
All in all, Badla is a kind of film, where if you are guessing something then you are bound to be proven wrong. And the climax is like the king of all suspenses, I have seen till date.
4.5/5
(coz I hadn't watched the Invisible Guest till watching Badla and please, you also don't, if you want to be served with a spine chilling thriller with Badla)
