THERE ARE GOOD MOVIES, THERE ARE AVERAGE MOVIES AND THEN COMES THIS
Pros:
If you are looking for an informative entertainer, then this is your thing. Plus the best thing was that it was just patriotic in it's theme (not jingoistic)
Cons:
This was designed for telling us about the struggles of our ISRO scientists for sending MOM to Mars. However in some places, you may feel that instead of a science based true event movie you are watching Ekta Kapoor's '2.0'. And I don't understand why you have to put hindu muslim in everything?
Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) the mission director of Chandraayan 1 is nearly hopeless about their next move after it's failure due to project director, Tara Shinde's (Vidya Balan) fault. However Tara finds a perfect way of completing Rakesh's next, nearly impossible, Mission Mangal. They gather a team of 5 junior scientists and 1 extremely senior scientist, for the mission, but none of them is interested in the mission. How Rakesh and Tara, with their team, accomplish Mission Mangal forms ther rest of ther story.
If disregarding all the family drama that takes place, this script is actually a very good one, and could have been even excellent. Like getting the idea of fuel, from cooking puris, shows what we Indians can do with our , which is a great thing. And some things are extremely bogus, such as, I'm a fan of AR Rahman, so I would have to turn a Muslim to follow him. I mean, does that even make a sense? So much family drama makes it a bit cringy.
Akshay Kumar's addition in the movie was done just to boost it's box office performance, considering the star's huge star power. He is good in his role, which is not a new thing, but his screen presence is weak at places and it seems that he is underused in places. Although in the beginning portions and in the climax it's him, who owns the scenes.
Vidya Balan is completely in her natural form and she has the maximum screen presence in the film. She emotes very well in her role and reminds us of Tumhari Sulu (that's a sign of being repetitive also)
Among the ladies, it's Nithya Menen who impresses us the most with her debut movie. If given proper roles, she could create magic on screens.
I don't know why are Taapsee Pannu and Sonakshi Sinha are taking the credit for the movie's success. First of all, their last solo starrers didn't even touch the 10cr mark and secondly, they have little to do here. Both of them are even just okay in their performances.
Kriti Kulhari is another girl who impresses us after Nithya Menen. She is really convincing as the troubled scientist Neha.
Sharman Joshi is just out of syllabus. I didn't expected him to have a meaty role here, but he invokes the maximum laughs with his antics. He is excellent as the innocent scientist Parmeshwar.
H N Dattatreya is a veteran, waiting to be discovered. He is too cute as the senior scientist Iyer and is just fantastic in his role. His comic timing is just more than spot on.
Sanjay Kapoor surprisingly does a good chunk of role here and even reminds us about his signature song- "Ankhiyaan milaye kabhi ankhiyaan milaye"
Purab Kohli and Md Zeeshan Ayyub don't have much to do, but do whatever they were supposed to do sincerely.
Special mention to Vikram Gokhale as the senior scientist and Akshay Kumar's boss. He is just superb in his role. Also, Dalip Tahil is seen in an important role after ages. He is good as the opposing scientist and wins over you in the finale.
All said and done, Mission Mangal is something that will entertain you thoroughly. Just don't expect a Kesari Or Tik Tik.
