After a gap of nearly 9 months, a big screen material movie is released in the form of Christopher Nolan's TENET. TENET, which was actually supposed to release on 17 July, got postponed due to obvious reasons. However it managed to have a theatrical release worldwide on 26 August. Although after a great start, there was a tough road ahead for TENET, due to surge in cases, irregular lockdowns .etc. However it managed to cover it's budget of $200M by having a worldwide gross of $357M.
Now coming to India, with the recovery rate keeping increasing, are there any chances for a movie to work?
Ask yourself! Would you go in this condition to watch a movie and enrich the big screen experience?
A movie named Suraj Pe Mangal Bhaari starring Diljit Dosanjh releases on 15 November, on the occasion of Diwali. Due to zero to no promotions, the movie wasn't that huge success, but managed to collect decent collections, comparing Diljit's last hindi releases.
Now, with TENET arriving on 4 December, there was absolutely 0 expectations from the movie. It was expected to wrap up around a lifetime of under 1 crore.
Guess what? The advance booking collections are only more than 2 crores. Having 25K tickets being sold for the weekend, which is in fact higher than the number of tickets sold for 2020's biggest hit Tanhaji's weekend. Now the predictions for the opening of TENET is 4-5 crores (this is more than Dunkirk's weekend collections in India in normal scenario). With a Hollywood movie managing to get such a superb advance, what is Bollywood doing?
Releasing movies like Indoo ki Jawani, shakeela, which honestly would have gone unnoticed in even the OTT platforms also.
But is it really Bollywood's fault? Producers like Sibashis Sarkar (Sooryavanshi, 83), Aditya Chopra (Shamshera, Jayeshbhai Jordaar), Salman Khan (Radhe), Bhushan Kumar (Mumbai Saga), Jackky Bhagnani (Bell Bottom) have some biggest bets of box office with them. But should they release now? No doubt audience will flock to theatres, but what about those places where theatres haven't opened? Everyone is blaming the producers and actors. This is not the solution. How can they release the movies in the places where theatres haven't opened? There are big superstars like Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, how can they betray their fans who don't have access to theatres till now (I mean theatres haven't opened in their states till now). The problem could only be solved if and only if the exhibitors request the state governments of those states who haven't opened cinema halls till now, to open the theatres ASAP (considering the cases in those areas of course).
